Madison Bumgarner effective in return for Giants, who still lost

Madison Bumgarner wasn’t dominant in his return from the disabled list Saturday, but he was effective.The Giants lefty did not factor in the decision of Andre Dawson Jersey Saturday’s 5-3 lo s tothe Padres, but went seven innings and allowed just three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks.Bumgarner mi sed the last three months with a left shoulder AC sprain sustained the injury during a dirt bike accident on April 20. He is still without a win on the season, now 0-3, but the Giants ace did not show any ill-effects from his extended stay on the DL.To make room for Bumgarner, the Giants placed struggling Johnny Cueto (6-7, 4.59 ERA) on the DL with blisters. Bumgarner made four quality rehab starts, striking out 16 batters with four walks in 16 2/3 innings and allowed just four hits.The season is still lost for the Giants (35-57), who are in last place in the National League West and 28 games back of the first-place Dodgers. But at least they know Bumgarner is still capable of quality stuff.Also finding his groove following a stint on the DL is Angels center fielder Mike Trout, who collected a pair of hits in Saturday’s 6-3lo s to the Rays. Trout was activated from the DL on Friday after mi sing 39 games with an injured thumb. He went 1 for 5 in his return and, though the Angels have lost both games with Trout back, they have to feel good that he has had a hit in each game.Studsof the NightRed Sox pitcher Chris Sale may have had to take a no-decision in Saturday’s home game against the Yankees. Sale left the game with 1-0 lead in the eighth inning before the Yankees tied it in the ninth on Matt Holliday’s solo home run and then went on for a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox with three runs in the top of the 16th inning. But Sale continued his career dominance of the Yankees. He struck out 13 batters with just two walks and scattered three hits over 7 2/3 innings. Sale’s ERA against the Yankees is now1.17 in 69 1/3 innings. After playing 16 innings on Saturday, the Yankees and Red Sox have a day-night doubleheader scheduled for Sunday.Travis Shaw’s eighth-inning solo homer off Phillies relieverJoaquin Benoit lifted the Brewers to a 3-2 victory at Miller Park. Shaw’s go-ahead home run gave him an MLB-best 22 go-ahead RBIs this season, meaning a third of his team-high 66 RBIs have given the NLCentral-leading Brewers a lead.Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn struck out just three and gave up eight hits, but did not allow a run in 6 1/3 innings against the Pirates.
